ITV SignPost has partnered with British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust (BSLBT) to offer a new trainee scheme aimed at getting young Deaf film-makers into the industry.
Applications are now being invited from Deaf film-makers and production talent who want to break into the industry.
The annual scheme, which is the first of its kind, will begin in January 2020 and see Deaf talent employed on a range of BSLBT content, which ITV SignPost has been commissioned to make.
Over the 12 months each trainee will be given access to bespoke training, industry mentors and gain invaluable hands-on experience in a range of television production roles.
As trainee’s they will be under the employment of ITV, the UK’s biggest commercial broadcaster. As such they will enjoy the same benefits and opportunities other ITV employees receive.
ITV SignPost is an award-winning production house based in Gateshead. It provides on-screen translations for broadcast partners and produces creative content for both a Deaf and hearing audience. It has an ethos is that every programme it makes has a production crew of at least 50% Deaf or people with disabilities.
BSLBT commissions television programmes made in British Sign Language by Deaf people in partnership with hearing people. The Trust was set up in 2008 to offer an alternative way for commercial broadcasters to meet regulatory requirements to provide sign language on their channels.
At the end of the traineeship it’s hoped that those with the required skills and ability will then be employed on BSLBT’s productions across the country.

There is a feeling that there has been a glass ceiling for Deaf talent in the industry and many talented Deaf film makers are being lost to other career choices. This scheme will hopefully provide a pathway for those who want to forge a career in television production. We are delighted to be partnering up with BSLBT on this.”
Applications are open now and will close on October 1st. An assessment day will take place in late October.
